The Way to Successful Business: MDPI-supported Association ‘Maku Fato’ Hones Business Skills at a Festival

by Siti Zulaeha, Livelihood Officer MDPI

Starting a fish processing business is not easy, but it is not impossible. For fishing families, a fish processing business can increase the market value of the fish they trade.

However, coastal communities need strong business skills to ensure their processed products are accepted by the market. An example is the business run by coastal women from Ternate, North Maluku, who boldly ventured into tuna-based products through Maku Fato, a women-led fisheries processing and marketing association.

From July 18-20, 2024, Poklahsar Maku Fato promoted their products at the Akebay Festival in Maitara Tourism Village, North Maluku. This festival is a prestigious event by the Tidore City Government to promote the culture, tourism, and coastal products around Tidore City.

Maku Fato stood out at the festival as the only business selling fish-based food products among 10 other enterprises. Their success in seizing opportunities at the festival was aided by the guidance of MDPI, which supported them for nearly a year in exploring business potential and market opportunities.

From a hobby to an established women-led business

In August 2023, 10 coastal women from the Maku Fato association started using their spare time to cook fish-based products. Driven by their passion, they diligently created culinary delights and aspired to establish their own business. Their enthusiasm led them to successfully organize and build their business.

The determination and commitment of the Poklahsar members caught the attention of MDPI, prompting them to assist with Coastal Livelihood Diversification. MDPI guided the group through business development and registration, leading to the official formation of Poklahsar in December 2023.

Expanding networks

MDPI’s support focused on developing the group’s internal potential, identifying logistics and supply chain opportunities, exploring market possibilities, and refining marketing practices. One significant step was registering Poklahsar for the Akebay Festival.

Participating in this festival gave Poklahsar Maku Fato their first opportunity to prepare products and test the group’s cohesion. The experience not only improved their hospitality skills and market insight but also helped them build business relationships with consumers and fellow entrepreneurs.

Unsurprisingly, several visitors who tasted Maku Fato’s products at the Akebay Festival asked for the group’s contact information for future orders.

“This is an opportunity to promote our tuna meatballs to the local community. Additionally, it is a joy for us when representatives from various institutions also enjoyed our tuna meatballs,” said Ariyanti, a member of Poklahsar Maku Fato.
