Morotai, North Maluku Province

MDPI began working in Morotai in 2018 because their fishery resources play important role in the supply chain. Located in North Maluku, Morotai has been implementing various programs to support “Lumbung Ikan Nasional” and tuna management plan. MDPI’s work in Morotai spans 1 village, 2 landing sites, directly supporting 209 fishers. Morotai comprises a significant fishing ground for yellowfin tuna. With the presence of many industry partners and a push to get the fishery into MSC certification, MDPI is working in Morotai to support the development of a good data collection to meet the eco-label standard.

The Main Activities

MDPI implements port-side data collection activities in 2 landing sites. On the water, MDPI deploys onboard observers, spot trace, time-lapse cameras (TLC) and pelagic data system (PDS). Data collected in Morotai is uploaded into I-Fish, shared annually with fishers through a data sharing event, and bi-annually under a provincial-level management platform established by MDPI (an FCMC in North Maluku province).
