Training Specialist (TS)

JOB FUNCTION: This is an exciting new position available at MDPI. The successful candidate will engage with the program teams to develop training materials and workshops to support local stakeholders’ capacity to engage in natural resource management. The TS will work with the Program Director and Program Managers to develop, conduct and evaluate training materials and programs to advance community capacity to engage in fisheries management. The focus is on community members in small-scale fisheries communities in Northern Sulawesi, with lessons learned and transferable across MDPI working sites.




The TS is a new position in the organisation and will be responsible to the Program Director. The TS will work on a variety of tasks related to developing specific training materials for province-based stakeholders. The focus of the training materials is for financial literacy and fisheries management, with an emphasis on building capacity across female suppliers/middlemen and community members. The TS is expected to contribute to other areas of MDPI’s work that fall under community capacity building as necessary and is expected to have a close collaboration with all three of MDPI’s program staff in designing materials. The position will involve travel to the field (remote fishing villages across Indonesia) as well as interaction with a variety of stakeholders, predominantly fishing industry.   • Develop training materials and schedules on topics related to, but not limited to, fisheries management and financial literacy, ensuring personal growth of trainees
  • Adjust training content and format based on feedback from trainees and observation of implementation
  • Develop, organize, conduct and evaluate training programs for groups and individuals
  • Create teaching materials and learning literature that are accessible to community members
  • Create budgets for all costs associated with training, and write detailed reports to justify expenditures for reporting to executive management
  • Prepare training locations by ensuring instructors have all of the tools, technical equipment and resources needed to effectively teach a course
  • Maintain a database to ensure training outputs well recorded
  • Assist and report to Program Director
  • Work collaboratively with each department Manager and team as required

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing learning materials for communities in Indonesia
  • Teaching and facilitation skills
  • Ability to assess training needs and objectives
  • Ability to design, develop, implement and evaluate response programs and initiatives on a particular topic (supported by program team as necessary)
  • Familiarity with fisheries management and financial literacy an advantage
  • Analytical thinker and problem solver able to come up with creative solutions to diverse problems
  • Considerate of local cultures and settings
  • Able to work collaboratively with teams and independently
  • Time management skills on projects
  • Ability to stay positive, supportive, and open to new ideas or approaches solutions to solving problems
  • Good command of the English language
  • Considerate of sensitive data and settings

Working Environment

  • Standard office work environment with travel to the MDPI sites in eastern Indonesia as required

Timeframe: 12 months; extendable
