Indonesian Independence Day: MDPI Celebrates with the Tolitoli Community
In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Indonesia Independence Day, fishing communities in Tolitoli, in collaboration with Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) and the Fair Trade Committee (FTC) Tolitoli and Fishers Associations (FA) organized fishing tournament for handline fishermen, a photo contest, a national anthem singing contest and a beach clean-up to round off the day.
The tournaments were held in Salumpaga Village in August 2015 and received good response from the community. The fishing tournament was followed by 22 participants from 10 fishing boats. The rule of the fishing tournament is to catch mature fish; either marlin, tuna or barracuda and it is not allowed to catch Endangered Threatened and Protected (ETP) species. Ir. Hardiyan, M. Si, the head of Dinas Kelautan dan Perikanana (DKP) Tolitoli attended the event and was highly impressed, “this is the first fishing tournament event held in Tolitoli and I plan to support the adoption of the idea to other villages”. He also added that this is a good event to increase fishermen awareness of the importance of ETP and the importance of keeping the beach clean.
The Photo contest and singing contest were eagerly joined by 32 participants and 76 participants respectively. It was a large number for a simple event, and we are so delighted to see their excitement. Hopefully, we can support more exciting, educational and empowering events in the next year 🙂
MDPI wants to say thank you to handline fishermen, DKP and community in Tolitoli who supported the event to celebrate Indonesia Independence Day.
